Go Skate Day: Snowboarders Who Rip On a Skateboard Too
It's officially summer and you're probably reading this on June 21st, which means it's Go Skateboarding Day, so we thought we’d highlight some snowboarders that rip on a skateboard to get you inspired in the off season.
John Cardiel
John Cardiel is the blueprint when talking about snowboarders that rip on a skateboard. Cardiel had breakout footage in Fall Line Films’ Riders On The Storm (1992) where the snowboard world saw the “Cardiel Flip” for the first time. Then the story is that he came down from the mountain and took over the world of skateboarding by skating with power and aggression. Get the full Caridel story when you watch his inspiring episode of Epicly Later’d. We'd say the classic Cardiel is his part in Transworld Skateboarding’s 12th video Sight Unseen (2001). All hail Cardiel!
Noah Salasnek
Noah Salasnek was one of the first to bring “skate style” to snow and his pro model board with Sims featuring skateboard trucks on the base graphic is a perfect symbol of that. Notable Salasnek skateboard footage can be found in his part from Upping the Ante (1993) by Mack Dawg Productions.
Todd Richards
Todd Richards grew up snowboarding and skateboarding halfpipes from east to west, as noted in his Bomb Hole episode. Here’s some photo proof that Todd's method grab goes beyond his snowboard. Or find him on the cover of books at your local library. Watch him skate the old Quiksilver skatepark.
Rob "Sluggo" Boyce
Rob “Sluggo” Boyce may be known as one of the founders of the Red Dragons and the first to do a backflip on a skateboard but his time on a snowboard is undeniable from having signature gear with World Industries, riding for Division 23, to being a snowboarding stunt double in Out Cold. He’s still crushing it on a skateboard at 54, just cruise Sluggo’s Instagram for proof.
Cara-Beth Burnside
Cara-Beth Burnside is a certified OG skater and snowboarder. She was a part of the first United States Olympic snowboarding team at the 1998 and competed in Japan. She’s podiumed at X Games, US Opens, and Vans Triple Crowns. Notably with Gold in summer and winter X Games pipe events. Watch her part in Our Turn (2001) from XX Productions.
Shaun White
In 2007, Shaun White had a pro model snowboard with Burton and a pro model skate deck with Birdhouse the same year he won his first X Games Gold for vert. He’s done double’s with your favorite skaters and has multiple X Games gold in summer and winter halfpipe events. Following in the footsteps of Salasnek and others, Shaun’s part in Mack Dawg Productions’ Stand and Deliver (2001) features skate footage mixed in with his snowboard footage. Notable skateboard moment would be Tony Hawk announcing Shaun winning X Games Vert Gold in 2011. If winning X Games Vert contests isn’t your style of skating, Shaun has footage featured alongside Tony Hawk in Adio’s One Step Beyond (2001) and is still skating between announcing The Snow League contest series.
Scott Stevens
Scott Stevens is your favorite snowboarder’s favorite snowboarder and he just might be one of your favorite skateboarder’s favorite skateboarder’s too with Jamie Thomas giving him the co-sign on doing a CAPiTA x Zero Skateboards board for Scott’s 10th pro snowboard on CAPiTA which even led to a special capsule with Zero. Notable skateboard part would be No Country for Bad Burke since it made the rounds on skateboard media when it first dropped. Warning: you'll spend a lot of time rewinding trying to figure out all of Scott's tricks per usual.
Jed Anderson
Jed Anderson is the G.O.A.T. to many and he keeps his reign going by ripping on a skateboard. Find his skateboard footage in many of Blue Tile Lounge’s shop videos and projects. Notable part would be his opening part in Blue Tile Lounge's 7th full-length video, Baby Blue (2018) that can be found playing on Thrasher Magazine’s website aka “The Bible” for most skaters. Watch the full video below to see Jed alongside a cast of prominent Canadian skateboarders.
Jake Kuzyk
Jake Kuzyk is extra smooth on a snowboard and skateboard. Look at how smooth he is. Notably he’s filmed a bunch of skate videos, is the filmer behind a lot of the Anitsocial skateboard shop videos, and you can find his name in the credits of notable skate videos including ones from Vans and Spitfire. Watch most of his skate videos on his skate YouTube and balance it out with a peek at his snow YouTube. Jake’s Civic Affair is a favorite of the Slap Pals and has more Jed Anderson skate footage in it.
Blake Paul
Blake Paul is another smooth rider on both the skate and snow and that fact might be why Blake and Jake a teammates on Vans Snowboarding together. When he’s not riding in the winter, he’s getting clipped up on his skateboard in the summertime. Find numerous examples floating around his instagram between the pow clips. Peep summer 2023, some street footage, and some more.
Parker Szumowski
Parker Szumowski is a certified ATV who can snowboard, skate, and surf and is teammates with Jake and Blake on Vans Snowboarding (maybe there's a rule about being a good skater to get on the team?). Parker probably won’t even know he's on this list because he’s busy looking for the next backyard pool. Here's him skating a vert ramp just like east coast forefather Todd Richards.
Jill Perkins
Between winning most every award in snowboarding, Jill Perkins holds it down on a skateboard. Which makes sense when you realize her friend group includes Nora Vasconcellos and Nicole Hause. Plus she's on the Vans Snowboarding team (Are you noticing a theme to that team too?)
Cole Navin
Cole Navin might be the reason why everyone is trying to 50-50 crazy kinked rails these days but from the one-footers and hippie jumps in his earlier snow parts his riding is clearly influenced by skateboarding. Watch some of his skate footage in "Leap Year".
Pat Fava
From all the time we've spent with Pat Fava, he just needs to be on board at all times so when the snow melts skateboarding becomes to go-to for him. Here’s him loading up his special meter with a ledge combo.
Phil Hansen
Phil Hansen is pro for both Lib Tech snowboards and skateboards. Check out his pro deck here and watch his pro skate part to see Phil phuck up some PNW transition and metal.
Sean Fitzsimons
Sean Fitzsimons is a certified problem on a snowboard and growing up with a halfpipe in your backyard leads you to be a certified problem on a skateboard too. Louie Lopez personally asked him to be on his team during the Skullcandy Crusher Cup. He also might be the only person on this list to have skated a Mega Ramp.
Jake Canter
Jake Canter is rocking a Red Bull helmet when skating the same TF park that most of the Olypmic skate kids are going to so that says something. Find him vlogging about skating. Here’s him cruising the Venice skatepark and blasting airs.
Blake Lamb
Blake Lamb might have quit social media but his snowboard video and his Brown Connection (2021) skate video are still standing and are a reflection of how Blake can stack footage no matter what board he's on.
Anddddddd.... honorary mention to every skateboarder strapping on a snowboard at Zumiez 100K.
